In This Class: Osae Komi Waza, Shiho and Kesa Gatame

In this class, we drilled fundamental newaza techniques from the osae komi waza (pinning techniques) with a focus on shiho and kesa gatame (four corner and scarf hold locks). This is just a quick excerpt of the grappling from our art, all of which are found within the forms (kata) of the Takamatsu-den arts, ie. Jinenkan, Bujinkan and Genbukan. To actually find the techniques (waza), you must train the art, and do so with focus and discipline. Not make believe.

Once you discover what is already there, then you spar. You pressure test. You get choked out, tapped out, thrown. Only then can you discover the tactics (kakehiki) and reasoning around each technique.

100% of what is being demonstrated can be considered core Judo, it's been a passion of mine since I was a child. However, I teach it from the reference points of kata found within the Kukishin Ryu and Takagi Yoshin Ryu and the Shinden Fudo Ryu, so that my students can cross reference these traditions and understand them more thoroughly.
